Gary is the Director of Corporate Communications at the City of Vaughan. He is a confident, competent and results-oriented professional with considerable cross-functional experience in strategic communications, issues management, media relations and project management. He is an Accredited Business Communicator through the IABC, and his diverse experience is augmented by a formal education in journalism and public relations. Prior to joining the City of Vaughan, Gary was Director of Communications and Marketing at the City of Waterloo and worked in various senior positions at the City of Mississauga for 11 years. He is also a professor at McMaster University in the public relations diploma program.

Gary is an experienced presenter who has spoken at the MISA Ontario 2014 Annual Conference and Tradeshow in Ottawa, the 2011-13 Federated Press Government Communications Conference in Toronto and has addressed senior officials at the opening of the Canadian Pavilion at the 2005 World Expo in Aichi, Japan, among others.

Changing the Landscape – Communicating Internally at The City of Vaughan

This presentation will chronicle the journey of internal communications at the City of Vaughan, beginning with the occasional staff memo from the City Manager to a full-scale plan with a variety of tactics, including a social intranet platform, an internal communications committee, and approaches to reach out to employees who do not have access to corporate computers or smartphones. This presentation will provide context on how the City's Internal Communications Strategy was created as well as how it was launched, ongoing measurement and next steps.
